Our Take on 2025 Philippine Elections: Noise, Hope, and the Search for Good Governance

This election season, the weight of our vote feels heavier than ever. The choices we make will determine the future direction of our nation, shaping our economy, our environment, everything! Our vote is equal to our future. Simple as that. The upcoming Philippine elections are important, and we need to be an informed voters. This is about why is it so important to be informed before we vote, and how we can cut through all the noise to make smart decisions.

Election season here in the Philippines is always a vibrant, sometimes chaotic, and deeply personal affair. In this season, we see different platforms, and voters are bombarded with a lot of promises from hopeful candidates. Politics here is like a mix of different things, sometimes confusing, we don’t know which are true or everything is just sugar coated words.

One of the biggest things I notice is how noisy everything is. It is like everyone is shouting on social media, and sometimes it is hard to figure out what is true and what is not. In a nation with one of the highest social media usage rates globally, the digital realm has become a primary battleground for narratives, and the impact of voter choices is undeniable and deeply concerning. The consequences for voter choice are profound. Misinformation can easily and skillfully manipulate public perceptions of candidates, highlighting fabricated scandals or downplaying genuine concerns. For voters who rely heavily on social media for news and information, it becomes increasingly difficult to discern facts from fiction, leading to decisions based on misinformation rather than informed analysis.

Then there is the whole popularity thing. It seems like sometimes people vote for someone just because they are famous, not because they have good ideas for the country. Elections are often driven by the popularity of individual candidates rather than solely on their platforms or policies. Political dynasties also remain a significant feature. Family names carry weight and provide established networks and resources, which often makes it challenging for newcomers with a much better plan for the country to compete. And honestly, it is frustrating when some politicians promise a lot of things during the elections and then you don’t see those things actually happen.

However, despites the frustrations, misinformation, and inequality, there’s also a spark of hope that keeps flickering. I see it in the student organizations advocating for social change, who provide reliable data all over the internet which serves as an eye opener. I notice some young people who make sure that their voices are heard, that their encouragement to vote wisely will reach people. The access of information, which sometimes is overwhelming, also empowers us. Internet might be full of false information, but we can also use it to research for reliable data, to analyze policies, to check the backgrounds of the candidates who “aim” to make our nation better. We should be aware because awareness can be a powerful catalyst for action and we should be knowledgeable, because our future is at our fingertips.

As a Filipino citizen, who are aware of how political decisions directly impact our lives. This fuels our desire for good governance and accountable leadership. We want a future where our hard work is rewarded, where opportunities are based on merit, and where the systems in place actually work for the benefit of the people. We believe in the potential of our nation, not for the worst but for the better. We may be frustrated, and at times even disillusioned, but our hope for a better Philippines remains. We are watching, we are learning, and we are ready to contribute to building the future we envision.
